A tall well built inside forward John was signed from Glasgow Rangers in August 1946, having guested at Chelsea FC during WW2.
A school teacher, he never adjusted to the pace and demands of English football and in October 1949 and after making 4 first team appearances John reverted to amateur status as a "permit" player after which he retired.
He moved to Jersey in 1963.
