Charles Warren Mitchell was a son of Susanna Margaret Ellen Madalena (née Zittle) and John R. Mitchell, born in July 1869 in Wolfsville, Frederick County, Maryland. In 1880, he was enumerated with his mother and siblings in the household of his maternal grandparents, Lydia Ann (née Muck) and Samuel Zittle, in Boonsboro, Washington County, Maryland.

Charles W. Mitchell on 3 November 1890 in Baltimore, Maryland, enlisted as a private for 5 years' service. He was a farmer; born in Wolfsville, Maryland; age 21 years and 3 months; light brown eyes, dark brown hair, fair complexion, 5 feet, 8¾ inches. Private Mitchell was assigned to the 2nd U.S. Artillery, serving in its Batteries C and G.

Private Mitchell was discharged on 2 November 1895 in Newport, Rhode Island, on expiration of his term of service. His character was rated as "Exclt"—excellent.

Charles W. Mitchell enlisted, for a third time, on 23 November 1898 in Newport, and assigned to the 2nd U.S. Artillery, Battery B. Private Mitchell on 1 June 1900 was enumerated with his unit at Fort Monroe, Elizabeth City, Virginia. He was dishonorably discharged there on 29 July 1900. (Records of a second enlistment are not available.)

Charles Mitchell and "Jennie" Cox were married on 25 December 1905 in Shepherdstown, Jefferson County, West Virginia. (Virginia Mae "Jennie" Cox was the daughter of William Cox.) The couple are believed to have been the parents of 12 children.*

In 1910 U.S. Census, "Charley" and "Jennie" "Mitcher" and their two daughters were boarding in Bakerton, Jefferson County, West Virginia. He was then a laborer in a lime kiln. In 1920, "Charley" and "Nellie" Mitchell and their six children resided in the Shepherdstown District, Jefferson County. He was then a farm laborer.

Virginia and Charles Mitchell separated or divorced before 1930. In the 1930 U.S. Census, Charles W. Mitchell, marked as widowed, was living in his brother Archie's household in Frederick County, Maryland. Virginia M. Mitchell, marked as divorced, was a housekeeper for a farmer in Berkeley County, West Virginia. Daughter Mary E. lived with her mother. The couple's two eldest daughters, Helen and Nellie, were then married. The two oldest sons, Charles and Lee, were inmates at the West Virginia Industrial School for Boys. Son Arthur was boarding with a farming family in Washington County, Maryland. The couple's youngest children are not found in the census. Virginia Mitchell died in 1931 in Berkeley County.

Charles W. Mitchell died on 9 April 1939 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Edna and John Edmund Baker, in Downsville, Washington County, Maryland. He was 69. According to his obit., he was survived additionally by: "Mrs. Mahoney Cummings [Nellie Irene], Harper Ferry, and Mrs. David Jones [Helen May], Shepherdstown, W. Va.; sons Arthur, Carlisle, Pa., and Charles, and Lee, Oregon, Ill.; sisters Mrs. William St. Clair, hagerstown, and Helen Mitchell, Baltimore, and a brother, Archie, Frederick." ("Deaths: Charles W. The obit. omitted some of his sons. The obit. of son Carlton Lee Mitchell listed among his survivors four brothers: "John, Richmond, Va.; Richard, Utah; Arthur, Frederick; and James Mitchell, Mexico City, Mexico." (Daily Mail, Hagerstown, Maryland, 21 Jul 1980.)

Burial

Charles W. Mitchell's obit. reports: "Burial in the National Cemetery at Sharpsburg." This has not been confirmed.

Notes

Birthplace, Wolfsville, reported in two enlistment records. His obit. (see below) states that he was "born near Harpers Ferry, W. Va." (Which is about 25 miles south of Wolfsville.)
