DAYTONA BEACH, FL: Melvin B. "Jake" Acker, 86, passed away on Sunday, November 20th at his home in Daytona Beach, Fla. He was born on September 2, 1930 in Roaring Spring, Pa., son of the late Melvin K. and Malinda (Burket).

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Eunice (Lynch) of Daytona Beach, Fla., a daughter, Deborah of Fremont, Ohio; a son, Ted Acker (Brenda) of Eugene, Ore.; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his "kid" brother, James Acker (Rhea) of Claysburg, Pa.; brothers and sisters-in law: Bert Lynch, Bruce Lynch (Marilyn), Barb Lynch and Russ Wilt; several nieces and nephews, with special thanks to Amy Acker-Knisely and Nellie Cowher; and many great-nieces and nephews.

After contracting polio at the age of 4, Melvin had ground-breaking surgery at age 17 to correct the uneven growth of his legs, spending a year in the hospital. After graduation, he moved to Fremont, Ohio, where he raised his family and had a successful career finishing scissors at Clauss Cutlery. After retirement, he continued to make and sell scissors, traveling to craft shows, patenting a kitchen scissor called the "Mollygoozer," providing shears for the Slinky Co. and others, and even having a pair travel into space with NASA astronauts.

He was an avid reader and a fan of all sports, especially following the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State Nittany Lions his entire life. He also enjoyed sitting in his sun room visiting with his buddies.

Arrangements are by Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., Roaring Spring, Pa. After cremation, a memorial service will be held at a later date.
