FIREWORKS KILL TWO LOCAL BOYS
TWO OTHERS BADLY BURNED IN TRAGEDY IN MILITARY PARK
Two teen-age Vicksburg boys are dead and two others in serious condition from burns received when a box of fireworks exploded in the the back seat of their car early today.
Ike Othel Coleman, 17, of 2911 East Main Street, died instantly and his body was burned beyond recognition. Albert Lee Hackler, 17, died in a hospital a few hours after the tragedy.
Seriously burned were Shirley M. Mayhall of Oak Ridge Road and David Pritchett of 2794 Washington Street.
The accident happened on Confederate Avenue near the Louisiana Monument about 1 o'clock this morning.
Police Chief Albert Allen said a box of fireworks on the back floorboard of the car exploded. Investigating officers did not ascertain the cause of the explosion. A fifth person in the car, whose name was tentatively listed as Pete Hall, address unknown, escaped with only minor burns.
The automobile, a 1948 Plymouth sedan, belonged to Pritchett. The heat of the fire which followed melted door handles and other inside fixtures in the sedan. The blaze was extinguished by firemen of the Vicksburg Fire Department.
Investigating officers and ambulance drivers said that Coleman apparently never moved after the blast. His body, still in the sitting position, was taken from the back seat after the fire had been put out.
Hackler was lying about twenty yards away from the wreck.
Mayhall and Pritchett were rushed to Mercy Hospital in a car. Pritchett was reported to be the more seriously burned of the two.
Investigating officers said there were 'two or three hundred articles' of fireworks in the car. Fragments were inches deep on the back floorboard.
Coleman who enlisted in the Navy three months ago was the son of Ike Coleman of this city and Mrs. Veanie Hayes of El Paso, Tex. He leaves his parents and three brothers; Podesta Coleman of the U.S. Navy; Wayne Lee and Morris Coleman of El Paso, and his grandfather, Will Stokes of Noxapater, Miss.
His remains are at the Glenwood Funeral Home where arrangements are incomplete.
Hackler, a high school student and former Evening Post carrier boy, was the son of Mt. and Mrs. M.E. Dixon on Jackson Road.
He was born in the Oak Ridge community and his family moved to Vicksburg about seven years ago. He was a senior at Culkin Academy and played last year on the football team.
In addition to working as a newspaper carrier he worked for Western Union as a messenger boy on weekends.
He is survived by his parents; four sisters, Mrs. Howard Snow of Creston, Ohio; Miss Doris Hackler, Mrs. Excell Dunn and Miss Martha Dixon of Vicksburg; two brothers, Lonnie Ray Dixon and James Dixon of Vicksburg.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at the Fisher Funeral Home.
