Obituary for Hugh Russell Grimes, Sr
Hugh Russell Grimes, Sr., age 91, passed away Tuesday evening, May 9, 2023. Hugh was born in Carthage, Mississippi on July 11, 1931 to parents, Harley O. and Verbie Troutman Grimes.

Upon completion of high school, Hugh enlisted in the USMC and served in combat in the Korean War. He then gained his trade at Hinds Jr. College and married the love of his life. Work brought Hugh and Betty to Houma, La. where they raised their four children. Hugh began his own business, Grimes Air Conditioning Services, with Betty, as bookkeeper. Hugh was a hard worker who rarely hired anyone to do work he was capable of, and he was blessed to be capable of most every task. This and his conservative lifestyle enabled Hugh to close his business and fully retire at age 52.

Early on, the family participated in carnival clubs, Hugh was a member of both Terreanians and Houmas, a board member of the latter. He always enjoyed fishing and family camping. With his young family, they camped with other "Kampin Kajuns". After retirement, Hugh and Betty traveled both independently and with the Avion Club on many 'travelcades' across the country, to Canada, Mexico, the Yucatán and overseas to Ireland, England and Italy with new friends. He was proud that they brought most all of the grandkids, by pairs, on special trips to different states to share his love of our country's wonders. Hugh was an avid birdwatcher, lover of nature, and especially endeared to the National Parks, having gone through them all.

He and Betty traveled to all state capitals and archives delving through books and documents on a quest for family connections with their new found passion of genealogy. He would want you to know that he and Betty traced his direct line back 6 generations to his 4th great grandfather, who, astonishingly was also named Hugh Grimes, of Duplin County, NC., and that this same Hugh and wife, Elizabeth, along with some sons are lauded as American Revolution Patriots. Hugh and Betty were near inseparable through their focus on travel, genealogy and family. Whether attending grand and great-grandchildren's activities or family reunions mainly in VA, NC, GA, AL, MS and TX, they did everything together until Betty's unexpected death in 2010.

Some time after Betty's passing, Hugh moved to Carthage where they had built a homeplace on childhood land. They had gone often, visiting relatives and caring for the country land of ponds, woods, a large vegetable garden and fruit trees. There, Hugh continued to make a daily trek down to the ponds to feed the fish, check the nesting geese, enjoy the songbirds, and attend to broken trees, making 'burn piles'. Nearly two years ago, with age limiting his mobility, he moved to Lafayette, LA to be closer to the majority of immediate family and for healthcare.

Hugh was gifted with an amazing ability to retain information. He knew every highway throughout the country not only from studying the road atlas but by personally traveling most of them. He stopped by to introduce himself to countless distant relatives across the nation. He could 'talk your ear off'. Hugh was a wealth of knowledge gained not by the educational system but by his intrigue to read and learn about this world. This might possibly be what he will be most remembered for, and found lacking, in his absence.

Hugh was a patriotic and proud man who was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Sons of the Confederacy, the American Legion, Woodmen of the World, and Freemasonry. He is a legacy of New Hope Baptist Church where he will be laid to rest alongside Betty, his parents and many family members. He spoke of the Lord often and looked forward to the life to come. Though Hugh lived to the advanced age of nearly 92, his death was unexpected and he will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his children, Teresha Bonvillain (Mike), Alesha Bergeron (Brian), H. Russell "Rusty" Grimes (Darlene), and Glenda Matt (Miles); his grandchildren, Scott Bonvillain, Melanie B. Frierson (Jeremy), Amanda M. Pry (Nate), Jessica M. Vazquez (Daniel), Lauren G. Prejean (Chris), James Grimes (Jon), Dr. Christopher Matt (Stacey), Jason Matt, Rebecca M. Dickens (Walker), and Catherine Matt; his great-grandchildren, Victoria F. Aaron (Nick), Cyrus and Lyla Pry, Amelia and Brianna Vazquez, Aiden Prejean, Eli Sonnier, Ian and Owen Prejean, Audrey, Jude, Oliver, and Estelle Matt, Ashley Matt, Edward and Elizabeth Matt, and James Dickens. One great, great grandchild, Hazel Aaron.

Hugh was preceded in death by his cherished wife of nearly 56 years, Betty Stallone Grimes originally of Natchez, Mississippi; his parents; his very beloved grandson, Steven James Matt; and his siblings, Harlene McCann, Emma Hollingsworth, James Grimes, Mary Adams, and Effie Ann Segrest.

Interment will follow a family memorial service in Carthage, Mississippi at an unspecified date.

I want to give Hugh and his wife Betty credit for helping to connect our family line together. If it were not for them a lot of us would not be any futher back than what we could find in the 1850 Al. census. In 1996 I had just found out that Stephen Grimes was my 3rd Greatgrandfather, even the search of Duplin Co.,Nc. could not give me the info needed to connect with James Grimes, Hugh Grimes and than to Walter Grimes.
Thank you Hugh and Betty Grimes.
