Born September 26, 1947, in Wichita KS, she grew up in Derby, KS and, after graduating from Derby High School, received a BA degree from Oklahoma Christian College.
She moved to Dallas, TX and worked in several office firms until she joined American Airlines in 1987. She retired in 2012 having worked in various positions including reservations, passenger services and training instructor in Austin, TX and London.
She was a friend to all with her infectious smile and a giant hug. She compiled the family genealogy, and enjoyed crafts, sewing, quilting and scrap booking. Rita's passion was traveling, especially to Scotland, and family reunions. A member of Ridgewood Park UMC, she designed and made banners for the Sanctuary, and also for other UMC churches. She volunteered in many ministries like Vacation Bible School, The Austin Street Shelter, The Wilkerson Center and chaperon for youth mission and ski trips. Rita was a choir member for many years and performed in RPUMC musicals.
Rita was preceded in death by parents, William R. Austin and Wilma J. (Alley) Austin.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at 11:00 am at Ridgewood Park United Methodist Church, 6445 E. Lovers Lane, Dallas, TX 75214. A special thank you The Woodbury House and her primary caregiver, Stephanie Walker and the Loving Care Hospice caregivers.
