Yves Berthelot died after being bitten multiple times by a bull shark while swimming off the Pacific ocean island of Kouare, New Caledonia, famed for its idyllic turquoise waters and white sandy beaches. Yves Berthelot was with his wife and friends on a cruise in the south of the archipelago and was swimming just meters from the boat when he was attacked by the bull shark. He was bit on the leg, arm and groin. Passengers, many of them health care workers, were able to pull him from the water. They administered care but Yves died before the helicopter arrived which had a 45-minute flight time.
