Mrs. John D. Sumner
Mrs. Sumner, wife of Colonel John D. Sumner of this place, passed from this life Tuesday, April 4 at her residence in Kensington in the seventieth year of her age. She leaves besides her husband a son, Gilbert L. Sumner of Lansing, Michigan; two daughters, Mrs. Mary S. Fieldhouse and Mrs. Charles H. Davidson, three grandchildren, John, Charles and Helen Dodge Davidson, all of Kensington; two sisters, Miss Mary Dodge, also of Kensington and Mrs. John B. Ramp of Cleveland, Ohio.
Helen L. Dodge was born in Byron, New York in 1846 and in 1855 moved with her parents to Kalamazoo, Michigan where most of her life was spent. She was a student in Kalamazoo College and on October 23, 1866 was united in marriage to Colonel John D. Sumner.
Her church life for more than fifty five years has been of a most devoted character and at the time of her death she was a member of The Warner Memorial Church. Hers was a bright and happy spirit and for nearly fifty years she has created for her loved ones a beautiful uplifting home life. With perfect faith in Him who said, Because I live, ye shall live also she has passed out of the shadow and with her hand in her Master's has entered into life eternal.
The funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon conducted by her former pastor, Rev. James T. Marshall of Washington. Interment was made at Arlington.
