Jeremiah was the son of James Wesley Rickles & Dicey Nelson who married on 5 Dec 1857. He had a sister, Elizabeth who was born about 1861.

His mother was the oldest child of Matthew Nelson & Leah Robbins who married on 2 Jan 1834. Her younger siblings, and Jeremiah's aunts and uncles were Manila Elizabeth Nelson Nelson, Manley Nelson, Jasper Nelson, Gillespie Nelson, Senea Alabama Nelson McGuire Nelson, Newton Lavert Nelson, Elem Ashbury Nelson, John Nelson, Nancy Nelson and Malissa Nelson.

After the death of his mother, his father married her 1st cousin, Winnia Nelson on 2 Apr 1865. She was the daughter of William Nelson & Sarah Morton. Jeremiah's maternal grandfather, Matthew, and his step-grandfather, William, were sons of Edward Nelson Sr & Winifred Johnson. It is highly likely that Jeremiah's paternal grandmother, Sarah Nelson Rickles, was also the daughter of Edward Nelson Sr.
