"Woodside has lost her representative of the courtly manners of the past generation by the removal of Caleb Tappan Howell, Esq., whose death we have announced in a recent issue. A resident of the old Sacket mansion for forty years, his daily life was interwoven with the progress of Woodside, where even to the passing stranger his appearance excited respect. Mr. Howell was born in 1798 at Chester, Morris Co., N.J., but the family belong to the "Hamptons" on our Island. His early life was spent at Ithica, Cayuga Lake, where for some years prior to his removal to Woodside he held the office of Justice of the Peace. By Mr. Howell's decease a very sensible void has been created in the Riker and Kelly families with whom he was intimately connected."
