Second Prime Minister of Denmark. He served as prime minister for two different periods. The first time he served was from January 27, 1852 to April 21, 1853. The second time he served was from July 11, 1864 to November 6, 1865. Prior to becoming prime minister, he attended the Herlufsholm School and later became a lawyer. He held numerous local posts including auditor and assessor, and in 1824 joined the governing council of Tamil Nadu in India. In 1831 he was appointed State Council to the town and county bailiff at Store Heddinge in Zealand. In 1838 he was appointed officer of the Diocese of Aalborg. In 1843 the became Director of the General Chamber of Commerce and later President of the College of Commerce in 1848. He is best remembered for the implementation of a new constitution and for leading the country during the latter part of the Second Schleswig War.
