Etta Harris was born Etta Virginia Walden on October 14, 1907 in Lowndes County, Mississippi, the daughter of Carter and Sallie Walden. She was the youngest of three children and had two older brothers, John and Nat. Etta married Claiborne "Dock" Gunter and they had five children; Sallie Bell, Mary Etta, Nat, Emma and John Earl Gunter. They were divorced. In April 1949, Etta was joined in Holy Matrimony to Rev. William Harris. To their union was born one son, William Charles Harris. Etta was preceded in death by her parents, Carter and Sallie Walden; brothers, John and Nat Gunter; husbands, Claiborne Gunter and William Harris; and stepchildren, Thomas Harris, Nancy Gwynn, Luther Harris and Jesse Harris. She was survived by her children, Sallie Swanigan, Mary Wilson, Nat Gunter, Emma Gunter, John Gunter, and William Harris; and stepchildren, Harry Harris, James H. Harris, Annie McCrary, Joseph Harris, Elizabeth Thompson, Robert Harris, Authur Harris and James T. Harris.
