"Dad" Whipple Passes: This community was considerably shocked last Friday evening upon learning of the death of L. N. Whipple, who passed peaceably away sometime between 6 and 7:30 p.m. While he and his good wife were sitting by the fireside in their home in south Drain. Mrs. Whipple, thinking her husband was peaceably sleeping was unaware of his passing. It remained for Eugene DeLaunay and L. J. Ritchey, who were delivering milk and came to Dad Whipple's little store near the Whipple home, to make the discovery.

After calling at the door for Mr. Whipple, Mr. Ritchey was informed by Mrs. Whipple that her husband was sleeping and that she would go to the store to wait on them. Thinking that Mr. Whipple did not look natural, Mr. Ritchey went back to the house to look at him again and decided he had passed away. Relatives were immediately notified and the news of Mr. Whipple's death was broken as gently as possible to his faithful wife.

Mr. Whipple has suffered with rheumatism for several years and has had many a severe sick spell from which he has raillied, and returned to his little business at the corner of his residence lot. He had taken care of his customers up to the very hour of his passing.

Mr. and Mrs. Whipple had been made very happy by in-gathering of their children during Christmas week and all had departed again for their homes when they were called back by their father's death.

Lloyd Nelson Whipple, 82, a well known resident of Drain where he resided for the past 47 years suddenly passed away at his home Friday evening Dec. 28th. He was born in Mystic, Conn. Sept. 14, 1852 and came to Oregon from Iowa.

He was married in Nevenville, Iowa, March 13, 1875 and had he lived until March 13, 1935, would have been married 60 years.

Mr. Whipple was very active in his community until illness forced his retirement.

Besides the widow he is survived by nine children; Mrs. Pearl Ross, Portland, Mrs. Bee Minter, Oakland; Mrs. Bell McElhinney, Salem; Mrs. Madge Dixon, Roseburg; Charles N. Whipple, Custer, Wash.; Ralph Whipple, Fishtail, Mont.; E. G. Whipple, Drain; R. L. and Hugh Whipple, Roseburg.

He was a member of the Methodist church where services were held for him Monday, Dec. 31 at 2:30 p.m. Rev. W. C. Cronk officiating. Interment took place in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in charge of H.G. Stearns of the Douglas Funeral Home. (See story from the Drain Enterprise, July, 7, 1966; "Drain Almost Became Railroad Terminal". Source:
