He was the husband of the late Mary (Pickard) (Page) Brown from 1983 until her death in 2001. He grew up in Littleton and was a graduate of Littleton High School, Class of 1938. He graduated from Green Mountain College in Poultney VT where he received an Associates in Business.

After working for Filene's in Boston for a short of time, he entered the King's Point Merchant Marine Academy in 1944, where he became a marine engineer and served for the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII.

He worked for U.S. Lines and Lykes Brothers of New Orleans for total of over 30 years at sea. He later drove a truck for Leahy Trucking in Littleton for 10 years.

"Brownie" was a member of St. Anne's Church of Littleton, Littleton Historical Society, and the Massachusetts Branch of the Antique Truck Club.

Among his survivors are his former wife Priscilla (Wright) Brown of Pt Pleasant, W. Virginia, his children Richard W. Brown Jr, of Gardner, Susan King of Michigan, Deborah Harper of Racine, Ohio, Elaine Brown of Pt. Pleasant. W. Virginia, and the late Karen Cullen, his stepdaughters, Carol Jones of Oregon, and Donna O'Connell of New Seabury, MA.
