U.S. Senator, Politician and Judge. He served in the United States Senate from New York from January 3, 1971, to January 3, 1977. He earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in English from Yale University in 1943 and served in the United States Navy during World War II (WWII). After graduating from Yale Law School, he began to practice law in 1950 when he was admitted to the bar in Connecticut and practiced until 1953. In 1968, he ran in the 1968 general elections as a member of the Conservative Party of New York for the United States Senate but placed third in the general election but would later win the 1970 general election as the first member of his party that was elected in Federal office and served there for one full-term. Later during the Reagan administration, he was first appointed as the Undersecretary of State for International Security Affairs, then as Counselor of the Department of State, and finally, as a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the latter of which he served from December 17, 1985, until assuming senior status on August 31, 1996. He was the older brother of Columnist William Buckley and at the time of his death, the oldest living former U.S. Senator.
