Actress, Author. Born Norabelle Jean Roth into a Jewish family, her father operated a plant with Coca-Cola, her mother was a school teacher. After winning a local beauty contest, she ventured to Hollywood and landed a contract with MGM which resulted in her being cast with a minor role in the Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland comedy-musical "Girl Crazy" (1943). Over the next four-years, she experienced small parts in several features before finding an early role of substance in the picture "The Big Fix" (1947). She will perhaps be remembered for playing Barbara Randall in the B-Science-Fiction picture "Phantom from Space" (1953). She would play Lona Lane in the commercially-acclaimed, James Dean film "Giant"(1956). During the 1950s and 1960s, she accrued a large sum of television credits which include "The Lone Ranger," "State Trooper," and "77 Sunset Strip," before retiring from the industry. She penned the romance novel "By Love Fulfilled" (1980). She was married to actor James Whitmore from 2001 until his death in 2009.
