Alvin adopted Hazel’s son from her first marriage and raised him as his own. Alvin and Hazel owned a little store on the outskirts of Continental, Putnam County, Ohio. Alvin was also a Continental councilman and served as a substitute rural mail carrier. He was a member of the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Continental where he served as a Sunday School Superintendant for many years.
