"Graveside Rites Held Here for Ada Hornbeak. Private graveside services were held here this morning [at Home of Peace Cemetery] for Ada Hornbeak, 94, who died Saturday in a Berkeley hospital. Mrs. Hornbeak was a resident of Porterville for many years prior to moving to Berkeley, about 30 years ago to be near her daughter, Mrs. Helen Shaler. She was the widow of a former Porterville businessman. Mrs. Hornbeak was a member of Palm Leaf chapter, Order of Eastern Star, in Porterville. Born in Visalia on May 18, 1875, Ada Julia Hornbeak was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Henry Farley. Mrs. Hornbeak's grandfather was George Harlan, who started west with the Donner party and traveled across the plains as far as Salt Lake City [sic]. There he and his train of covered wagons questioned the advisability of crossing the mountains so late in the season and separated from the party. The Harlan party traveled south to come into California, finally reaching San Francisco where Mrs. Hornbeak's mother Sarah Ann Harlan, was born in June, 1848. Mrs. Hornbeak's husband, Montgomery Adams Hornbeak, died here in 1922. Prior to his death he was associated with the late Newt Leggett in both the department and men's furnishing stores. Prior to that he had been a pioneer oil operator in Kern River field near Bakersfield. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Shaler, survivors include a son, Farley Hornbeak of San Antonio, Tex.; two grand-daughters, Mrs. Jacqueline Marks of Ojai and Mrs. Sally Le Mieux of San Jose; and three great-grandchildren."
