John Andrew Alewine was the son of James Addison Alewine (1843-1911) and Sarah Davis (1842-1915). He had a twin sister, Margaret Ann Alewine Harper (1880-1941). John married Lola Mae Duncan (1885-1941) around 1901. They lost one child as an infant and later adopted Lola Mae's niece and nephew, Susie Mae Duncan (1912-1988) and Johnny Sylvester Duncan (1914-1985). They took the Alewine name.

Obituary, John A. Alewine, Anderson Independent, Anderson, SC, 9 Jul 1952, p. 8:
"Williamston, July 8- John Andrew Alewine 71, died at 8 o'clock tonight at the home of his niece Mrs. J. H. Keeler (Mary Sally), on McAlister street. He had been in declining health for some time but was stricken and died suddenly.
Mr. Alewine was a native of Abbeville County, but had lived in Williamston for the past 40 years. He was a son of the late Add Alewine and Sallie Davis Alewine, his father a native of Abbeville, his mother originally of Alabama.
His wife, Mrs. Lola Duncan Alewine, preceded him to the grave in 1941.
Mr. Alewine was a member of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. J.B. Guthrie (Susie Mae), and one son, J.S. Alewine, both of Pelzer; four grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Gray Mortuary. The body will be carried to the home of his niece, Mrs. J.H. Keeler Wednesday at 4 p.m."
