Chesterton historian and archivist Eva Gene Hopkins passes at 80
Eva Gene Hopkins, 80, of Chesterton, Ind., passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2023.
She was born on Oct. 23, 1942, in Valparaiso, Ind., to Eugene and Evelyn (Shupe) Bruhn, both of whom preceded her in death.
On July 13, 1963, she married the love of her life, Hugh Hopkins, who survives in Chesterton.
She is also survived by her sons, Mark (Michele) Hopkins and Christopher (Kristi Harter), both of Chesterton; her seven grandchildren, Ryan, Emily, Steven, Justin, Jacob, Christian, and Liam; her great-grandchildren, Shay, Thea, Iris, Aela, and Oliver; her brother, Daniel Bruhn; and her many cousins.
In high school, Eva achieved the fastest speed in shorthand, and after graduation she became the secretary for Quaker Oats Company and Temp Secretarial Service.
She later became the secretary for the Shirley Heinze Land Trust and went on many nature walks, studying wild flowers, becoming an expert in identifying them, and compiling a notebook of her pictures.
Eva was the chief researcher for the Westchester Township History Museum. She compiled notebooks of research on almost every aspect of life in the Chesterton area, including churches, businesses, fire and police departments, historic buildings, early and prominent citizens, and much more. She did a lot of family genealogy research for many people.
She was a member of the Duneland Historical Society, where she participated in programs on local history. She was active on the Find A Grave website and added nearly 8,000 memorials. She was also a board member of the Sons of Norway.
Eva perfected her hobbies, and especially loved knitting and sewing. In addition to her hobbies, she was also a bookkeeper for Hopkins Ace Hardware and Hopkins Small engines.Yet she was the most humble person and never bragged about her accomplishments.
