Son of Henry Johnson and his wife, Abiah White. Grandson of Isaac Johnson.

Comfort enlisted in the Continental Army in May 1775 at Williamstown Mass. He served in the Massachusetts line under Capt. Abiather Angell in Colonel David Brewer's Regiment and under Capt Samuel Curtis in Colonel Ebenezer Leonard's Regiment. He gained the rank of Sergeant and served as an Artillery Artificer for the remainder of the war. He was discharged at West Point on June 7, 1783.

He and his wife Sarah were married on March 31, 1785 (other records show July 31, 1785) at Wells, Rutland County, Vermont.

He and his wife had the following known children:
Abraham (b. 1786), Hiram Sumner (1788-1853), Clarissa (1790-1872), Phebe Fanny (Phanne) (1792-1827), Henry(1793-1878), Ebenezer (1795-1884), Sarah (b. 1789), Persis (1800-1859), Laura (1806-1853).

Hiram Sumner Johnson was at points listed as sons Sumner and Hiram Sherman, although biographical records for Hiram Sumner show them to be the same person.

Although Sarah Melissa (1817-1850), m. Chester Sprague, is often listed as a daughter, she was not included in the distributions of Comfort's estate in 1840 or listed with his other living children in his pension records. In the book Sprague Families in America, she is listed as a "descendant of Comfort Johnson." She may have been a daughter of Sarah Johnson, who died before 1840, raised by Comfort and Sarah.

Comfort was granted a pension for his military service while living in Russell NY in May 1818. He died 22 years later while living in Edwards, and was buried in the Fowler Baptist Cemetery in the neighboring town.
