Lula and her twin sister Margaret joined a family with two older brothers, David Allen and James Earle Ruffin. Their parents were David White and Ida Buckley Ruffin who were settled in the Jackson, Mississippi area by the time the girls were born. Unfortunately, the children were orphaned by 1914. The girls went to live in Memphis with one of their aunts, Agnes (Ruffin) Lindsey and her husband Edwin. At the age of 20, Lula married Joseph Boulware and the couple settled in Memphis. They had two daughters, Jane and Ruth. By 1940 the couple had divorced and Lula moved in with her brother James Earle and family. She was employed as an appliance demonstrator and her daughters were being boarded by either friends or relatives nearby. She went on to become a school teacher and did not remarry. She was a member of the Christian Science Church at the time of her death.
