Marks was born in what was then Grabow, Galicia, in the Austrian Empire. The town is now Grabuv, Ukraine. He was the son of Itzik Hersh and Chaya Friedlander.

In May 1900, Marks, a glass cutter, immigrated to England, and he married Bluma there in Spring 1905. Their first child, Abraham, was born less than two years later.

Their children, in addition to the ones listed below, included Sidney, Basil (1917-1991), and Sophia (1921-1921).
