Lawrence James Croke was the son of Richard Croke and Theresa Gaffney Croke. He was born in Dalton, Massachusetts, as were his siblings. His older sister was Mary Gertrude Croke, and his younger sister was Kathleen Theresa Croke. When Lawrence was nine years old, he was playing on a street near his elementary school on the late afternoon of October 21, and was hit by a passing truck. He died minutes after the accident. He was taken to his parents home, and two days later, buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Pittsifeld, Massachusetts.
