Mary Gertrude Croke was born in Dalton, Massachusetts, in 1898. Her father was Richard Croke, and her mother was Theresa Gaffney Croke. She had a younger brother named Lawrence, and a younger sister named Kathleen. She never married, but was the favorite Aunt and Great Aunt in our family. She began her career as a telephone operator as a young woman, and retired after 49 years of service. She was an active member of St. Agnes' Catholic Church, and was also active in her small community. Her nieces and their children lovingly referred to her as "Auntie Mare". When she visited from Massachusetts to Tribes Hill, New York, she'd always bring glazed donuts in a pink box. She loved putting puzzles together. She was funny and kind.
