Requiem For A Musician
by Judy Sue Thomas
Mykal Ali was a musician, bass guitar in particular.
He certainly wore other hats during his tour of duty on earth, such as son, husband, father, but I knew him as my bass guitar teacher in the 80s.
I began lessons with him at a music store in Houston TX where he was employed at the time as a guitar and piano teacher. Because of a dispute with someone at the music store, he resigned, and began teaching lessons at his apartment, don't know how many students he had.
Mykal invited me, among others, to attend his bass guitar recital at the University of Houston. He may have played a stand-up acoustic bass guitar instead of electric bass. That day I felt dreadful, perhaps coming down with a minor illness, whatever it was all I wanted to do was stay home in bed and sleep, but instead of doing that I attended his recital.
At some point, he quit giving lessons because he had formed his own music group, called, if I remember correctly, The Mykal Ali Trio. He encouraged me to continue bass lessons with another music teacher, I didn't and never saw or heard anything about him again until the day I found out he had died.
Although I don't recall how I found out about his death, at the time I read something that sounded like it might be him and called the funeral home to confirm. The employee I spoke with wouldn't tell me anything, Mykal's family wanted privacy. So, I made a withdrawal from my memory bank and described Mykal to the employee who confirmed that was the description of the deceased black male residing in expose at their funeral parlor that I thought was Mykal Ali.
I wasn't able to attend his funeral but did send a condolence greeting card to his family via the funeral home. His widow sent me a thank you greeting card which I still have. I made a copy of the front and inside of the card I sent and wrote on the inside of my copy:
"Visitation: Wed (Wednesday) Jan 20, 2016, 5:30p Service: Wed Jan 20, 2016, 7:30p."
I mailed the card on Wednesday Jan 20, 2016.
In the Alex Cross books by writer James Patterson, Cross has a friend that he calls "Man Mountain" because of his physical size. Cross and his man mountain friend John Sampson are black men mostly employed in law enforcement. Mykal Ali was also a black man mountain but probably never employed in law enforcement as music may have been in his blood, mind, and soul.
Because Mykal's family wanted privacy, I don't yet have any information on his COD or burial.
Perhaps Mikhail, in Bass Guitar Heaven, teaches bass in that far better place to those who always wanted to learn but never got around to it or to organizing their sock drawer.
Respectfully, tuned to open G, Judy Sue Thomas, bass player wanted to be.
