Former Alaska resident Gaylord Kirk Samsel, 61, of Polson, Mont., died Sept. 9 of injuries suffered in an airplane crash. A visitation was at Mosley-Shrider Funeral Home in Polson. A Mass was at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Burial with military honors was at St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery.
Mr. Samsel was born Aug. 14, 1933, in Missoula, Mont., to William and Hallie Samsel. He attended several Montana schools before moving to Anchorage. He graduated from high school here in 1953. He was drafted into the Army and was stationed in Alaska for two years. When he was discharged, he won a Kenai Peninsula homestead in one of the last federal land lotteries in Alaska. He homesteaded in Sterling for three years before moving to Seattle. He earned an airframe and power plant license and worked as a smokejumper. In 1962, he moved to Sydney, Australia, where he lived for 10 years and worked as a helicopter mechanic. On Oct. 8, 1977, he married his high school sweetheart, Joan Matte Gates, at Blue Bay Lodge, Flat Lake, Mont. In 1983, they moved to Polson, where they built their retirement home on King's Point.
Mr. Samsel is survived by his wife, Joan of Polson; his step-children, Frances Gates of Portland, Ore., George Gates of Portland, Suzanne Gates of Missoula and Richard Gates of Salem, Ore.; his granddaughter, Nicole Gates of Missoula; three brothers, Hal of Polson, Colvin of Corvallis and William Jr. of Evaro, Mont.; his sister, Charlene Ewald of College Station, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Samsel was preceded in death by his step- mother, Alma Stohr Samsel.
