Last Tuesday, November 25, 1902, the telegraph wires announced the death of William A. Young at Sheridan, and many a Crook county home which contemplated a day of rest and rejoicing was instead filled with immeasurable sorrow. It appears that Billy, as he was familiarly known in this community, had been afflicted with a stomach disorder for several weeks prior to his death, but no one supposed the ailment would prove fatal. He attended to business until four days preceding his death, and perhaps this fact hastened the end.
The deceased was the first son of Capt. and Mrs. S.A. Young, and was born in Ohio in 1864, at a time when the patriotic father was serving his country in the civil war.
He came to the Black Hills with his parents in 1877, and to what is now Crook County three years later.
Billy was a very congenial companion, and was inclined to look on the bright side of life. In the early eighties he was one of the faithful mail carriers of the frontier, and later a trusted employee on ranch and range.
Just four years prior to his burial he left Sundance for Sheridan, where he resided until the summons came. The remains were accompanied to Sundance by Frank, the only brother of the deceased, and Mr. Brennan, a nephew. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the M.E. church, which was packed with sympathizing friends of the deceased and of the grief-stricken relatives. Rev. Roberts conducted the services, assisted by Mr. Nichols, both of whom spoke impressively.
Besides the aged parents and an only brother, the deceased leaves four sisters, three of the latter being present at the funeral.
