JULIA CHARLOTTE HOOPER-GRAVES was born on 24 July 1856 in Warren County, North Carolina to John DeBeniere Hooper and Mary Elizabeth Hooper. Julia was also a descendant of William Hooper, (her 2nd Great-Grandfather), who represented NC in signing the Declaration of Independence.

Julia lived in Fayette County, North Carolina in 1865, when Sherman's Army passed through during the Civil War. Julia's family returned to Chapel Hill in 1875 (her father had been a Faculty member there in the 1840s & 1850s), and was able to resume his position after reconstruction. Julia married Ralph Henry Graves in 1877 at Chapel Hill, Orange County, North Carolina, and they had FIVE children that are known of:

Infant Graves (unknown dates),
Ralph H. Graves, Jr. (1878-1939),
Ernest Graves (1880-1953),
Louis Graves (1883-1965), and
Mary D. Graves-Rees (1886-1950).

Ralph was a Professor of Mathematics at the University of North Carolina.

Julia passed away on 7 November 1844 at Chapel Hill, Orange County, North Carolina, and was buried there at the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery.

Daughter: Mrs. Mary Graves-Rees. Sons: Louis Graves, [Newspaper Editor of The Chapel Hill Weekly] & Col. Ernest Graves [Chief of Engineer's Office, Washington, DC]. 2 Grandchildren: Pembroke Rees [Navy pre-flight School, Athens, Georgia] & Ernest Graves Jr. [Army Engineer Corps, Europe]. Niece: Betsy L. Whitaker [of Denver, Colorado]. Two grandchildren: Pembroke Rees, [training at Athens, Ga in the Navy Pre-flight school] and Lt. Ernest Graves, Jr. [with the army engineer corps in Europe]."
