1907 Dec 6, Chico Record: Former Well Known Chico Resident in Town.
The Record received a call last evening from D. J. Foley, formerly of this section. Mr. Foley attended school in Chico during the later 70’s, when Col. H. T. Batchelder was principal of the high school and O. E. Swain in charge of the grammar. Since 1891 he has been in business in the famous Yosemite Valley, being the publisher of the “Yosemite Tourist,” the valley paper; the “Yosemite Souvenir and Guide,” and “Foley’s Yosemite the Beautiful,” a picture book.
“Of course, I have tried to keep in close touch with the development of Butte county, and especially of Chico, for here has been impressed the indelible impression of youth.”

1878 July 6, Weekly Butte Record: Personal. Daniel Foley passed a successful examination at Oroville last week, and obtained a teacher’s certificate.

Daniel J. Foley had the Yosemite Falls Studio in Yosemite Valley from 1891 until the early 1940s, his wife continuing the operation after his death in 1934. He published "The Yosemite Tourist" newspaper and also the "Yosemite Souvenir and Guide" for many years. He also published “Foley’s Yosemite Souvenir & Guide, a comprehensive overview of the glories of Yosemite," including places to stay, where to eat, what to see, and how to travel. The Guide was illustrated with both his own photographs and those of other photographers, including George Fiske.

1934 Oct 2, San Francisco Chronicle: Pioneer Yosemite Photographer Dies, Yosemite, Oct. 1 – Daniel J. Foley, pioneer Yosemite photographer and one time news correspondent, died today after a long illness.
One of Foley’s news assignments was covering Theodore Roosevelt’s visit here in 1903. He operated a studio here for many years, with Mrs. Foley. He will be given a Masonic funeral tomorrow at Mariposa.
