John K. McDearmon was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He was the son of James R. McDearmon and Martha Gannaway McDearmon. He came to Missouri in 1831. He attended the University of Missouri until his father's death cut short his studies. He was admitted to the bar in 1853. He served as County Clerk in St. Charles for many years, from about 1853 until the late 1880's. He married Lucy Ann Orrick in 1854. They had a total of nine children, with six living to adulthood.
