Hugo A. Winkel, 71, a resident of Heritage Nursing Center the past month, died there Thursday afternoon following a brief illness.
He was a former resident of the Sheboygan Retirement Home for three years.
He was born April 28, 1902, in Town of Schleswig, Manitowoc County, a son of the late Fred and Emily Winkel.
Mr. Winkel farmed in Schleswig as a youth.
On Sept. 8, 1928, he married Viola Rautmann. She died in June, 1946.
For many years Mr. Winkel was a painting contractor in the Kiel area. In recent years he worked for the A.A. Laun Furniture Co., Kiel, retiring in 1965 when he moved to Sheboygan. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church at Louis Corners, east of Kiel.
Surviving are a son, Frederick of Sheboygan; four daughters, Mrs. William (June) Froh Jr., Sheboygan, Mrs . LeRoy (Shirley) Kaminsky and Mrs. Merlin (Elaine) Fiedler, both of Sheboygan Falls, and Mrs. Robert (Grace) Hemschmeyer of Random Lake; 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Walter Klemme, Mrs. Hatti Salzmann and Mrs. Raymond Beckman, all of Kiel, and Mrs. Linda Witte of Plymouth.
He was preceded in death by brother, sister and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 Saturday at the Ballhorn Funeral Chapels, the Rev. Adalbert Schultz, pastor of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral chapels after 5 p.m. today. A memorial fund has been established in Mr. Winkel's name.
