George, the tenth of fifteen children of Jessie Ireland and Sarah Wells was born on 22 September 1841 at Tyler, West Virginia. George served at the rank of Corporal with Company H, the 5th Iowa Cavalry. He enlisted on 8 August 1864 and mustered out on 21 June 1865. George married Mary Elizabeth Sexson (1847-1923), the daughter of William Burris and Lucretia M. (Turley) Sexson in 1861 at Nebraska. They had ten children born at Nebraska:
