Professional Football Player. For five seasons (1977 to 1981), he played at the defensive end and linebacker positions in the National Football League with the New Orleans Saints, Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Born Joseph Patrick Campbell, he made his first impression on the football field during his years at Salesianum High School in Delaware. He enrolled at the University of Maryland where he played collegiate football and achieved All-American status and helped the Terrapins reach five bowl games. Signed by the New Orleans Saints as the number 7 overall pick during the 1977 NFL Draft, he totaled 65 career regular season games. While with the Oakland Raiders, Campbell contributed to a Super Bowl championship season (1980). After retiring from football, he worked as an education. He was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. Campbell was nearly killed in 2007 when the bike he was riding was struck by a truck. He suffered skull and brain damage and lingered in a coma for six-weeks. He was found dead in Florida during a hike.
