Nicholas was born on April 12, 1939, to Feliciano and Elena Duarte in Brawley, CA. He attended Miguel Hidalgo School, J.W. Oakley School, Barbara Worth Jr. High, and graduated from Brawley Union High School. Growing up, Nicholas worked on his father's farm, planting, sowing, and harvesting the family crops. In 1964, Nicholas married his sweetheart, Obdulia Flores, and they had four children. He worked for the Imperial Valley Housing Authority for 31 years. Nicholas was incredibly talented. Many afternoons, he would sit in his living room painting, drawing, and writing about events from his childhood and adult life. Nicholas also had a green thumb, and he spent many days outdoors working the land. Every year, he had an extensive, beautiful garden with an abundant variety of vegetables, fruit, chiles, and flowers. He took great pride in talking and sharing about every small plant in his garden. Nicholas also excelled in woodworking, building, and creating new things. He enjoyed fishing, outdoor activities, and watching baseball games. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and dogs. Nicholas was a man of integrity, unwavering devotion, courage, kindness, belief and love of God, and humility. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
