It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nicholas Duarte, 84, of Brawley, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He passed away on July 2, 2023.

Nicholas was born on April 12, 1939, to Feliciano and Elena Duarte in Brawley, CA. He attended Miguel Hidalgo School, J.W. Oakley School, Barbara Worth Jr. High, and graduated from Brawley Union High School. Growing up, Nicholas worked on his father's farm, planting, sowing, and harvesting the family crops. In 1964, Nicholas married his sweetheart, Obdulia Flores, and they had four children. He worked for the Imperial Valley Housing Authority for 31 years. Nicholas was incredibly talented. Many afternoons, he would sit in his living room painting, drawing, and writing about events from his childhood and adult life. Nicholas also had a green thumb, and he spent many days outdoors working the land. Every year, he had an extensive, beautiful garden with an abundant variety of vegetables, fruit, chiles, and flowers. He took great pride in talking and sharing about every small plant in his garden. Nicholas also excelled in woodworking, building, and creating new things. He enjoyed fishing, outdoor activities, and watching baseball games. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and dogs. Nicholas was a man of integrity, unwavering devotion, courage, kindness, belief and love of God, and humility. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Nicholas was preceded in death by his parents, Feliciano and Elena Duarte; and siblings, Nellie Acuna, Frances Raya, Maria Elena Mendibles, Feliciano Duarte, Sara Reyes, Eduardo Duarte, and Catalina Duarte.

Nicholas is survived by his beloved wife, Obdulia Duarte; son, Anthony Duarte (Lulu); daughter, Anna Duarte-Contreras (Jesus); daughter, Laura Duarte; daughter, Beatriz Duarte (Art Garcia); and grandson, Nicolas Duarte. He is also survived by his siblings, Leonard Duarte, Raul Duarte, Daniel Duarte, Lina Duarte, Albert Duarte, Sandra Perez, Susan Lucio, George Duarte, and Turie Duarte; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services for Nicholas will be held on Friday, July 21, 2023, at Sacred Heart Church in Brawley, beginning with a viewing at 9 a.m. A rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by mass at 10 a.m. Burial will immediately follow the mass at Riverview Cemetery in Brawley, CA.
