Bob was mostly a very jolly fellow. Hardly ever saw him he did not have a very big grin on his face. He was a good Uncle too, took good care of his step son Romie, and you would never have known the relationship was step relatives. Helen was a bad cook and Bob would work and come home and cook the meals. Oh she could cook, it just was not very good. Much of the time when it was family get togethers she would help in the kitchen, but some easy chores, like cut the salad up.
So Bob did much of the cooking and I think it was something they both enjoyed and neither of them seemed to complain out loud much about it. He also done a lot of sewing, he worked in an auto upholstery shop in Springfield and he made some of the clothes on their backs. Maybe not a lot of people know that. Helen told that to me personally when I was a teenager.
Bob would not say a lot about his stay as a prisoner while in the army. It was a time he preferred to forget and not discuss. I am sure he talked with adults, but I was a child and one does not share those things with children, I guess. I did hear my Aunt talking with my mother and laying in bed and holding Bob as he awoke from nightmares and would be drenched with sweat. So I know there was trauma from the experience.
One day he left the area where the family was shortly after he and his wife had gotten back together from a seperation. He went to Kansas to live. She [Helen] had vowed to get him away from his family. He did not have any contact with anyone just a bit once in a while with his brother Paul. He did not even go to his mothers house. So for about fifty five years he did not have so much as a call to family for a Merry Christmas. Helen succeeded, but only because he let it happen and he did not call, not even sneak away to call.
A phone call come from my Aunt Peg and told me that Bob had died the day before. He had a stroke. I was a young woman and married when he left the Kansas City, and Independence area and left the family. He in time just became a name. He did attend my dad's funeral. Never came to my mothers though.
Bob was cremated and the day after his death Helen was having a memorial. She asked Peg to come. Peg declined and I was not even told in time to go to the memorial....and it is all as well. I am sure I would not have went anyway.
Now back in Springfield and I pass that upholstery shop where Bob used to work and sometimes I look that way think of Bob as a passing, he used to work there and that was all...after all without contact what memories can you have.
