US Congressman. He was born in Winchester, Virginia, at 'Shady Oak,' Estate in about 1800. He was educated locally and pursued academic studies. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar, and began his practice of law in his native Winchester, Virginia. He then entered politics and was elected and served as a Member of the Virginia General Assembly from 1823 to 1824, 1832 to 1835, and again in 1839. He then ran for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Member of the Whig Party, he then served Virginia's 15th District (Twenty-Seventh Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1841, to March 3, 1843. He was an unsuccessful Candidate for reelection to the Twenty-Eighth Congress in 1842. After his term in the United States Congress expired he was succeeded in office by United States Representative Lewis Steenrod on March 3, 1843. After leaving the United States Congress he resumed his practice of law in Winchester, Virginia, until his death. He passed away at his 'Springdale,' Estate near Winchester, Virginia, on March 15, 1859, at the age of 59, and was buried in the Barton Family Burying Ground on his 'Springdale,' Estate. He was married to Caroline Marx Barton in North Carolina on April 29, 1833, and the couple had two children together. His wife Caroline passed away in Winchester, Virginia, on December 4, 1883, at the age of 83, but she was buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, Virginia.
