She married Donald Ames, who preceded her in death on May 5, 2003, on July 8, 1950. In their 53 years of marriage, they spent many happy weekends and retired summers at their cottage in Lakewood, WI and ten winters in Winter Haven, FL. She moved to Forest Lake, MN in 2020 to be nearer her daughters and enjoyed wonderful care from the staff at Amira.
Dorothy was a member of the Junior Service League and chaired the Visiting Nurse Service at the time it was turned over to Manitowoc County. She was also a longtime member of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish. She was an avid and skilled card player, especially bridge, and loved playing tennis.
In addition to beloved husband, Don, she is preceded in death by baby son Michael, parents Anton and Lillian Kochan, in-laws Carlton and Lillian (Thomson) Ames, brother Clarence and sister-in-law Edith, sister Audrey and brother-in-law Donald Kautzer, and brothers Louis and Anton (Tony) Kochan.
Survivors include daughters Cynthia (Jay) Ihlenfeld of Mahtomedi, MN and Nancy (Richard) Calkins of Forest Lake, MN, grandsons Kevin Calkins of Las Vegas, NV and Jeffrey Calkins of Yakima, WA, sisters-in-law Julie (Louis) Kochan and Dottie (Tony) Kochan, many nieces and nephews and best friend of 91 years, Marilyn (Carbon) Schilling who visited her from Chippewa Falls, WI just days before she passed.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association (act.alz.org) or a charity of your choice.
