He attended Asheville City Schools, Mars Hill College and was a 1949 graduate of Wake Forest University.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Herbert was an employee of American Enka Corporation for 26 1/2 years. He retired in 1993 from Champion International with 18 years of service.
He was a member of Montmorenci United Methodist Church where he was a member of the United Methodist Men's Club, past member of the Candler Lion's Club and a regular volunteer for Habitat for Humanity since his retirement.
Burial: Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
