Mark grew up in Mishawaka, Indiana, graduating from Mishawaka High School in 1968. He served six years in the U.S. Navy. He and his wife (Susan) married in December 1978. For many years, they lived in Carstairs, Alberta, on a small farm. He was active in the local Mennonite church.
