Alpharetta Lawton, 77, died July 29, 1952 at the Vernon Memorial Hospital, Viroqua, WI after a three day illness. She was born in Seeleyburg, WI Mar. 18, 1875, to Troy and Pheobe (Potts) Evans. She was married to Carmi Hodge and made her home in Boon, IA.
To this union 14 children were born, two dying in infancy. Her husband died while the children were young and left her with a family to raise. This task she did splendidly and when all were married and able to take care of themselves, she and the two youngest boys, moved to LaFarge.
She married Clarence J. Lawton who preceded her in death several years ago. Her youngest son Murl died in 1936.
During her years in Boon, IA, she was very active in lodge work. She was a charter member and Past President of John Pershing Women's Relief Corps and transferred membership to LaFarge. She also transferred from a Chapter of the Eastern Star in Iowa to the Rockton Chapter at LaFarge. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxillary of Jones-Lawrence Post No. 9075, VFW, LaFarge.
Survivors are eleven children, Orvalle Hodge of Kalispel, MT, Montie of Rock Rapids, IA, Dale of Sioux Falls, SD, George of Washington, D.C., Floyd of Sawyer, Dr. Clair of Bryn Mawr, PA, Furley of Soldiers Grove, Mrs. W.L. (Alva) Linton of Sioux Falls, SD, Mrs. P.W. (Violet) Luinstra of South Gate, CA, Mrs. C.A. (Verna) Bawden of St. Paul, MN, Mrs. A.H. (Amie) Ross of Mt. Vernon, IA. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held July 31, 1952 at the Methodist Church at LaFarge. The Rev. Walter H. Thompson officiated, with burial at the Star Cemetery in LaFarge.
