Davis, George L., age 86, of Pompano Beach, FL, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather died March 5, 2009. He was born April 15, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Freida Mercner Davis and George L. Davis. George attended the William Penn Charter School and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. At Penn, George was president of Phi Sigma Kappa, a member of the Kite and Key Honor Society, and lettered in baseball, basketball, and soccer. He was selected as a member of the 1943 All-American Soccer Team. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as Lt. (jg.) assigned to the Admiral's Staff of the 7th Naval District. Following the War George was active in Philadelphia as president of Davis Building Supply, President of the Ramblers Hockey Team and later on the Board of directors of the Philadelphia Flyers, as well as treasurer of the Philadelphia Arena. In 1960 he was appointed as a member of the U.S. Olympic Ice Hockey Team and the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating committee. He entered the investment business and eventually became National Sales Manager and a General Partner of W. E. Hutton & Co. and a member of the NY Stock Exchange. George was also elected to the Board of directors of Chris-Craft Industries. After moving to Fort Lauderdale in 1975 he served as executive vice-president of their boat division. He later was involved in several businesses using his sales and financial background. He particularly enjoyed golf, boating, and travel in his younger years. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a gentleman of charm, wit, insight, and integrity. He was an optimist all of his life and often said that he was one of the luckiest people in the world. George was the beloved and cherished husband of his wife, Jean, for 25 years. Loving father of Margaret Davis Packer and son-in-law William Packer, Mary Lee Davis Kenworthy and son-in-law Hugh Kenworthy all of Philadelphia, and Daphne Davis Hochfeld and son-in-law David Hochfeld of Coconut Creek. He also leaves 2 stepdaughters, Alicia Wagner of Ft. Worth, TX and Deanna Wagner of Weston as well as his sister Janice Davis, a nephew and 2 nieces of Philadelphia. He was very proud of his 5 daughters, 9 grandchildren, 2 stepgrandchildren, and 12 great-grand-children. George will be missed more than words can say. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 7th, at 1:00, Church-by-the-Sea, 2700 Mayan Drive. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request that memorial donations be made to Disabled Veteran, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH., 45250.
