Daughter of Joshua Jones Bennett and Mary Geary Hall

Sallie was approximately 4 years old when her mother passed away. At some point before 1855, her father married Elizabeth Severns. Shortly after this marriage, Sallie and her older brothers Andrew, Elias, and Isaac all stopped living with their father. Her brothers moved in with relatives or friends, while Sallie was taken in by her maternal grandparents, Elias and Sarah Hall. As a child and teenage girl, her grandparents raised her.

Sallie married Civil War Veteran James D. Patterson. They got married at Southampton Baptist Church not long after the war ended. The exact date of their marriage is unclear, besides that it happened on "September 1st".
