Originally named Max Radnitsky, most of the the family informally began using Ray as its surname about 1912.

Max married Minnie Lourie in Russia in 1888. They emiigrated to the United States shortly after marriage, and lived first in Philadelphia, then New York. After Minnie died in Brooklyn in 1945, Max moved back to Philadelphia, where some of his children lived.

He was the father of noted photographer Man Ray, who was born Emmanuel Radnitsky in Philadelphia on 27 Aug 1890.

Other children included Samuel Ray, born Samuel Radnitsky in Philadelphia 1 Oct 1892 ; Dorothy Ray Goodbread, born Dora Radnitsky in New York on 14 Dec 1895; and Elsie Ray Siegler, born Elsie Radnitsky in New York in 1898.
