VETERAN: During World War II, Mr. Cox served in the US Army as an officer in the 10th Mountain Division and the 97th (Trident) Infantry Division in the European and Asiatic Theaters.

James S. Cox, 93, of Moravian Hall Square in Nazareth, formerly of Bethlehem, died on Tuesday, November 1, 2011. Mr. Cox was born February 17, 1918 in Philadelphia, son of the late John Lyman and Evelyn Q. (Jackson) Cox. He attended William Penn Charter School and the University of Pennsylvania receiving a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree in 1939. He retired as Superintendent of the Forging Division at the Bethlehem plant after a career of 42 years with Bethlehem Steel Corporation. During World War II, Mr. Cox served in the US Army as an officer in the 10th Mountain Division and the 97th (Trident) Infantry Division in the European and Asiatic Theaters. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Combat Infantry Badge, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Army Reserve in 1955. He was a member of the Cathedral Church of the Nativity serving as a vestryman, clerk of the vestry and president of the Cathedral Choral Society. He was one of the founders of the Bethlehem Area Council of Churches.He sat on the board of directors of the Wilderness Club of Philadelphia and The Bach Choir of Bethlehem, and was a member of the Zoological Society of Philadelphia, the Honorary First Defenders in Bethlehem, the Society of Colonial Wars and the Society of the Cincinnati. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Cox was a superb fisherman and crack shot. He found particular pleasure with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors: He is survived by his wife, Ruth S. Cox to whom he was married for 70 years; four children, Ruth C. Crocker, wife of Robert G. Crocker, Cambridge, MA, John Lyman Cox III, husband of Meredith H. Cox, Hong Kong, Michael J. Cox, husband of Susan S. Cox, Allentown and Christine L. Cox, wife of Richard Austin, Wilton, ME; a sister, Mary Cammann, Portland, OR; eleven grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Predeceased by a sister Evelyn Q. York. Service: A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Funeral arrangements are by the John F. Herron Funeral Home, 458 Center Street, Bethlehem and the Herron Crematory in Bethlehem. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Good Samaratin Fund, Moravian Hall Square, 175 West North Street, Nazareth, PA 18064 or to the Cathedral Church of the Nativity, 323 Wyandotte Street, Bethlehem, PA 18015.
