WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - Herbert Thomas "Tom" Ayres died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital. He was 63.

He was born July 20, 1941 in Pittsburgh to the late William Herbert Ayres and the late Nellie (Hartley) Ayres.

He was a resident of the Long Valley section of Washington Township for the past 20 years.

Mr. Ayres spent 24 years with General Electric Power Systems.

After retiring, he enjoyed being close to his children and spending time with his granddaughters. He was often found catching up on his reading, enjoying fine food and drink, golfing and vacationing with his family.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Ayres was awarded the National Defense Service Medal on July 18, 1967.




He was a member of the Long Valley Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Karen (Lancaster)Ayres of Long Valley; one daughter, Kelly Ayres Toman and her husband, Stephen B. Toman, of Denver; two sons, Todd T. Ayres and his wife, Hilda M. Ayres, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Scott William Ayres of Long Valley; three granddaughters, Melissa, Madelyn and Megan; and two brothers, Charles W. Ayres of Henderson, Nev., and Lloyd Bert Ayres of Charlotte, N.C.

A memorial service will be held at the William J. Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Road, Chester, (908) 879-3090 on Sunday, Jan 2, from 1-4 p.m., with a special remembrance service at 3 p.m., at which the Rev. Aaron Nagel of Long Valley Presbyterian Church will officiate.

For those who are able, the family suggests remembering Mr. Ayres by donating platelets or the gift of blood at any local hospital. Otherwise, contributions in his memory may be made to The Jeffrey Wax Memorial Fund, Morristown Cancer Center, 100 Madison Ave., Morristown, N.J. 07962.
