Governor of Maryland. Born in Dorchester County, Maryland, Henry Lloyd descended from a family of political prominence. His paternal Grandfather was Governor Edward Lloyd; his maternal Great Grandfather was Governor John Henry. He was also a descendant of Colonial Governor Edward Lloyd II. Henry was educated at the Cambridge Academy, and began his career as a school teacher and principal. He continued his study of law in the office of his uncles, Congressman Daniel Maynadier Henry and Judge Charles Goldsborough, and was admitted to the state bar in 1873. In 1881 he was elected to the Maryland State Senate where he later served as the Senate President. Upon the resignation of Governor Robert McLane on March 27, 1885, Henry Lloyd assumed the duties of Acting Governor. Later, the Maryland Legislature officially elected Lloyd to the remainder of McLane's term. While in office, laws limiting child labor were enacted, and a tobacco inspection bill was passed. Lloyd also worked for a more equitable system of taxation. When his term as Governor ended on January 11, 1888, Lloyd resumed the practice of law. In 1893, he was elected to a 15-year term as an Associate Judge of the First Judicial Circuit.
