Harold "Shorty" Derrick will be 96 on Sept. 4. He currently resides at SunBridge at McCall though he has lived most of the past 66 years on the Salmon River.

He was born at Ironside, Ore. to William and Nell Derrick. He had one sister and one brother. After the age of 7, he lived with his uncle and aunt, Arthur and Minnie Derrick, and helped them with their cattle and horses. At the age of 12 he lived at Lucile for about a year while his uncle was constructing a road on the main Salmon River. After that they lived near Weippe where they raised horses and had a blacksmith shop. They also trained race horses and he enjoyed riding them. One horse, Red Wings, went on to be a champion on the racetrack.

He moved to Silver City where he carried the mail. In the winter time it was done on skis. Later he moved to Payette where he worked in the fruit orchards.

It was in Payette that he met his wife of 70 years, Christel Huff. They moved to Salmon River in 1940 and have lived there most of the past 66 years. They have two sons and one daughter, nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

He worked numerous places mostly ranching, packing mules and shoeing horses. He worked for the Circle C ranches and lived on White Bird Ridge Ranch for 16 years. He later worked for the U.S. Forest Serivce as a packer and worked in fire control at Big Creek and Chamberlain Basin. Later he had the shoeing contract for several North Idaho forests.

He built and operated Fall Creek Store on the Little Salmon River and also guided hunters near Chamberlain Basin and lived at Hettinger Ranch on the Salmon River. He also remodeled and sold several homes around the area.

He is a charter member of the Riggins Cowboy Association and helped build fences and bleachers at the rodeo grounds. He also clowned at the Riggins Rodeo for several years with Jiggs the mule. He helped construct the IOOF building in Riggins and was an active member for many years.

He and his wife loved to travel and made many trips to the southwest where they stayed for several winters. They also traveled to Nashville and Alaska. He loved to fish and just to visit with frineds and family. They are members of the Little Salmon River Bible Church.
