Marion was the son of Luther and Nancy (Reed) Dotson and was born in District 65, Wood, (W) Virginia. He registered for the Civil War Draft on July 1, 1863. He and his brother Martin enlisted in the 20th Virginia Cavalry, Confederate.
On June 7, 1866 he married Sarah Elizabeth Barker in the town of St Marys, Pleasant County, West Virginia. They were the parents of William Commodore, John Welch, Mary Catherine, Rosanna, Marion Jr., Minnie G, James, Bonnie, and Kate.
By 1900 his wife reported to have had nine children with only four still living. Those four were John, James, Bonnie, and Kate.
He was reportedly the only Confederate Army soldier to be buried at Saint Marys' cemetery.
