He was assistant controller and payroll supervisor at Anheuser-Busch in Newark before retiring in 1988 after 37 years of service. He graduated from South River High School and the University of Notre Dame. A decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Alexander received a host of medals, including the Bronze Star. He was most proud of his Combat Infantryman Badge. A member of the Armys 100th Division, 397th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Company F, the South River native fought in the Battle of the Bulge, captured seven Germans in a small cave while fighting in the Vosges Mountains, and was taken prisoner of war on Jan. 10, 1945. He was freed on March 30 of that year.
A communicant of St. Mary of Ostrabrama Church in South River, Mr. Alexander was very active at St. Marys, where he was a lector, Eucharistic minister, and a past president of the Holy Name Society.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Ruth Warnsdorfer Alexander, on Aug. 3, 2006; his parents, Anthony J. Alexander and Mary C. Alexander; his two brothers, Edward and Clarence Alexander; a granddaughter, Kelly Ann Alexander, and a son-in-law, Jerry Wieciek. Surviving are his three sons, Anthony Alexander Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of East Brunswick, Robert Alexander and his fiancee, Rose DiCara, of Spotswood, David Alexander and his wife, Lynn, of Yardley, Pa.; his two daughters, Mary Beth Wieciek of Spotswood and Barbara Biernacki and her husband, Zigmond, of Odessa, Fla., and his two brothers, Raymond Alexander of Piscataway and George Alexander of South River. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Robert Alexander Jr., Lauren Alexander, Anthony Alexander III, Theresa Alexander, Joseph Alexander, Joseph Wieciek, Daniel Biernacki, Katie Biernacki, and Meghan Alexander.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Rezem Funeral Home, 457 Cranbury Rd., East Brunswick, NJ followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of Ostrabrama Church in South River, NJ.
